HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Creek volleyball welcomes back Maymon in three-set win over Jeff

New Albany tennis blanks Seymour, 5-0

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The Silver Creek volleyball team welcomed back outside hitter Kristyn Maymon on Tuesday, as the host Dragons outlasted Jeffersonville, 25-8, 25-20, 27-25.

After missing several matches due to injury, Maymon returned by spiking 12 kills. Teammate Kim Jamros gave an inspired effort with nine kills.

Also for Silver Creek (8-1), Alex Carlton made 10 digs, Haley Garr served six aces, Danni Densford recorded five blocks and Danielle Ramser dished out 32 assists.

Despite the win, the Class 3A No. 7 Dragons were without two key players in sisters Hannah and Sammi Smith. They both did not play due to illness.

“In the first set, Kim Jamros played unbelievable. That was the best I have seen her play in four years. She was simply unstoppable,” Silver Creek head coach Jeff Zimmerman said. “In the second and third sets, Jeffersonville picked their game up. (Red Devil coach Tim) Cox did a great job of making sure his girls were into the match. They played with heart and intensity throughout the rest of the match.

“Unfortunately for us, we are currently lacking mental toughness. We committed 29 errors tonight. We can’t expect to play with the elite teams when we are consistently making those kinds of mistakes.”

Silver Creek will travel to Class 2A No. 2 Brownstown in a critical Mid-Southern Conference match on Thursday. Jeff will visit Clarksville on Thursday.

• Pioneers lose at Manual: Ashley Ricks collected 22 service points, 14 kills and five blocks as Providence fell at Louisville Manual, 25-22, 25-27, 25-14, 25-20.

Teammate Kattie Kochert had 22 service points and 14 digs, while Pioneer setter Abby Spitznagel distributed 33 assists. Also for Providence, Kristin Simms spiked seven kills and Taylor Gelbach had six digs.

“Manual was an excellent serving team with a very athletic offensive unit,” Pioneers’ head coach Terri Purichia said. “We didn’t serve-receive the ball well tonight, so that to me was the difference in the match. I thought when we did pass the ball on serve-receive, we matched up well. Manual is an excellent team, and for the most part we played them very well. I was pleased with our overall effort.”

Providence will host Louisville Holy Cross tonight.

• Braves win at Shawe: The duo of Erin Mikel and Allison Rademacher led Borden past host Shawe Memorial, 25-18, 25-14, 25-18. Mikel smacked 13 kills, while Rademacher had 11.

“Erin and Allison are producing some big numbers as of late,” Braves’ head coach D.J. Zipp said. “But Brooklyn Koetter, Brandi Peed and Crystal Lackey are stepping up their offense and making us a more balanced team. The back row has shown a lot of improvement as well.”

Borden will host Christian Academy of Indiana on Friday.

• Mustangs fall at Scottsburg: New Washington lost on the road to Scottsburg, 25-20, 25-11, 20-25, 25-21. Caroline Ricks led the Mustangs (6-4) with 16 kills and three service aces.

“Scottsburg is probably the best team we’ve played all year. They exposed a lot of our weaknesses like our net defense,” New Washington head coach Gary Graham said.

The Mustangs will host Henryville on Thursday in their Southern Athletic Conference opener.

BOYS’ TENNIS

• New Albany tennis blanks Seymour, 5-0: The New Albany boys’ tennis team started the week with a convincing 5-0 victory on Tuesday at Hoosier Hills Conference rival Seymour.

At No. 1 singles, the Bulldogs’ Alex Stewart downed Cody Scamacca, 6-0, 6-2. Winning at two singles was Kyle Landrum over the Owls’ Joe Kimbly, 6-0, 6-1. At three singles, New Albany’s Kris Thomas downed Ben Coomer, 6-2, 6-2.

Prevailing in doubles action for the Bulldogs were Christian Meyer and Luke Garmon at the No. 1 spot and Robby Erskine and Shuaib Mirani at No. 2.

“I felt that coming off of a long weekend, our team did an excellent job to play an away match and give away as few games as we did,” New Albany head coach Bob Dusch said.

Dusch says his troops should expect a battle today in a home match with Jasper.

“This should be a test of how much we’ve improved at this point in the season,” he said.

• Red Devils sweep Pioneers: Tenth-ranked Jeffersonville upped its record to 6-0 in dual matches with a 5-0 victory over Providence at Community Park in New Albany. The Red Devils won all but seven games during the match.

Jeff singles winners were Patrick Elliott, Shane Burke and Dan Ott. At No. 1 doubles, the Red Devils’ Tyler Mullins and Joe Nikitas downed Nick Finn and Brenden Popson, 6-0, 6-2. At two doubles, Jeff’s Jordy Rigsby and Robert Brown downed Andrew Jerdonek and Nolan Carrico, 6-0, 6-1.

“Jeffersonville has a great team. They play aggressive tennis, apply a

lot of pressure and do not allow their opponents to relax,” Providence head coach Scott Gurgol said. “They are smart enough to know when to play defense, and good enough to turn their defense into offense. They just have a well-rounded group of tennis players and we had nothing for them today.”

Jeff head coach Mark Reilly lauded the play of No. 2 doubles squad.

“That is only the second time these two have played doubles together, and today the combination worked out excellent,” Reilly said. “Jordy Rigsby is a sophomore, but stepped up and played like a senior today. Hopefully, the two can keep that kind of play going in the up-and-coming matches.”

The Red Devils will travel to Jennings County on Thursday. The Pioneers host Scottsburg today.

• Mustangs defeat Clarksville: Drake Krohn and Tarren Clapp each won in singles action to lead New Washington past host Clarksville, 4-1.

At No. 1 singles, Krohn defeated the Generals’ Jeremy Noe in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Clapp was the victor at two singles over Clarksville’s Austin Johnson, 6-4, 7-5.

New Washington (5-1) won both doubles matches. At the No. 1 spot, the Mustang duo of Matt Renschler and Devin Freels upended Matt Denton and Alex Stepp, 7-5, 6-2. New Washington won No. 2 doubles by forfeit.

“Clarksville pushed us today and I’m pleased with how we responded,” Mustangs’ head coach Wayne Davis said. “Nothing came easy for us, but we never lost sight of our goal. Tarren did a real good job and I just couldn’t be any prouder of Drake. I saw a determination in his eyes today that was fierce.”

Alex Johnson secured the Generals’ lone point, beating Chad McKinley at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1.

Both teams return to the courts today. New Washington visits Charlestown, while Clarksville hosts Silver Creek.

BOYS’ SOCCER

• Pirates thump Silver Creek: Doug Roskowski had four goals and two assists to lead visiting Charlestown past Silver Creek, 11-1.

The Pirates’ Sasha Weddington kicked in three goals, while teammates Hunter Hooker, Kyle Jenkins, Jose Marquez and Tyler Dahmer each had a score. Charlestown’s Gumaro Carrillo dished out three assists.

“We were looking for payback,” said Pirates’ head coach Andrew Smith, whose team lost in penalty-kick shootout in last year’s matchup with the Dragons.

Both teams will have MSC road games on Thursday. Charlestown (4-4, 1-2 MSC) will face Salem and Silver Creek will play Corydon.

GIRLS’ GOLF

• Highlanders top Jeff: Erika Shepherd shot a 49 as Jeff lost in dual-meet action to Floyd Central at Valley View Golf Club in Floyds Knobs, 176-231.

Rounding out the scoring for the Red Devils were Amber Collins with a 55, Tierney Mull with a 60 and Madison Kane with a 67.

Despite the loss, Jeff head coach Shadd Clarke thought his players learned several things about the course where they will compete in the Floyd Sectional on Saturday, Sept. 18.

“Our team hit some bad shots today that led to poor scoring,” Clarke said. “This is the first time that they have played a match at Valley View this year, and I know they learned a lot today about the areas to avoid. Amber had a solid round and I look forward to seeing her improve on her game through sectional.”

The Devils will host Charlestown and Corydon on Thursday at the Jeff Elks.

CROSS COUNTRY

• CAI’s Eldridge places ninth at Scottsburg Invite: Christian Academy’s Hannah Eldridge finished ninth in the girls’ race of the Scottsburg Invitational at Hardy Lake with a time of 22:40.

In the boys’ race, Kaleb Weaver led the Warriors by placing 46th. Teammate Cory Neel finished 56th and Levi Speth was 106th.

CAI will travel to Crawford County on Thursday.
