NEW ALBANY —
The Providence girls’ cross country team won the 45th annual Providence Invitational Thursday at Community Park in New Albany, scoring 44 points. It was the third meet the Pioneers have won this season.
Providence junior Kori Siebert finished first in a season-best time of 21:37. It was Siebert’s first victory of her career. Teammate Erin Denis placed third, while Pioneer senior Casey McCauley was eighth.
“Kori ran a very smart race tonight,” Providence girls’ coach Kim Huber said. “Her drive and determination show every day in practice, and she shined on the course tonight. I’m very proud of all of the girls and their effort tonight. We’re looking forward to sectionals next week.”
Floyd Central finished second, followed by Home School Union, Jeffersonville and New Albany. Henryville, Charlestown, Rock Creek Community Academy and Christian Academy of Indiana each fielded incomplete teams.
Bailey Knable led New Albany with a fifth-place finish. Jeff’s Ashley Friedrich and Kayla Barrett finished sixth and ninth, respectively. Floyd Central’s Gabrielle Rodriguez finished 10th.
Charlestown’s Alysha Flaget ended up seventh. Teammate Mary Hoff was 35th and the Pirates’ Brittany Miller placed 45th.
In the boys’ race, Jeff took first with 48 points. Floyd Central placed second, while New Albany was third.
Providence finished fifth, followed by Silver Creek and Home School Union. Henryville, CAI, Charlestown and Rock Creek each fielded incomplete squads.
The Bulldogs’ Anthony LaPorte won the race, followed by the Pioneers’ Lincoln Ottersbach in second. Providence junior Murphy Sheets placed fourth.
The Red Devils had four runners finished in the top 12. Tyrell Dowdell ran fifth, Connor Richardson was sixth, Thomas Kimbrell ended up seventh and Bradley Pavey placed 12th.
For the Highlanders, Chad Lawrence finished sixth, Justin Cavanaugh was seventh and Reese Tarr placed 11th.
For Providence, Alex Grove wound up 29th, Spencer Mitchell was 40th and Jacob Resch finished 73rd.
“The boys continue to improve each week and gain more confidence as we approach sectional time,” Pioneers’ head boys’ coach Chuck Crowley said. “I’m proud of their effort on the course tonight. It shows they are focused and ready for next week’s sectional meet.”
Jamie Hurley paced Charlestown by finishing 64th. Teammate Brett Brooks was 69th, followed by the Pirates’ Jase Shelley and Drexler Meadors in 85th and 91st, respectively.
Each of the area teams will compete in either the Southwestern or Crawford County Sectional next week.

The Floyd Central varsity golf team put up a team score of 323 to place fourth at the Lafayette Jeff Invitational on Saturday. Meanwhile, Floyd Central was third and Providence seventh at the Legends of Providence Invite at Champions Pointe.
