SEYMOUR —
Former Jeffersonville High School boys’ basketball player and Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott passed away on Wednesday at Schneck Medical Center at the age of 85.
Before becoming a Hall of Fame coach at Jasper, Hagerstown and Seymour high schools, Scott played for the Red Devils from 1943-46. The 1946 Jeff High graduate scored 300 points in his career at Jeff and helped the Red Devils win Jeff Sectional titles in 1944 and 1945.
During his senior year at JHS, Scott was team captain of the Red Devil football, basketball and baseball teams.
After a four-year basketball career at Hanover College, Scott began his high school coaching career. He compiled 334 victories in his 20-year career along 11 sectional championships and six regional titles. Scott won at least one conference championship apiece at Jasper, Hagerstown and Seymour. He only had one losing season in his career, which was his first year as a head coach.
Scott was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1981. The 8,110-seat gymnasium at Seymour High School is named after Scott for his successful coaching tenure.
The Seymour athletic department announced on its Twitter account on Thursday that visitation for Scott will be from 4-8 p.m. on Monday and 5-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Scott Gym in Seymour. The funeral service will take place at the gym on Tuesday evening shortly after visitation hours.
