INDIANAPOLIS —
No question, Olivia Boesing had the talent to win the IHSAA individual state singles championship this weekend at North Central High School.
However, the Floyd Central junior did not have enough energy to accomplishment the feat.
Boesing lost in the semifinals of the state singles tournament on Saturday morning to Fort Wayne Canterbury freshman Leah Barnes, 6-3, 6-4.
Boesing ended up finishing third in the state as she won the consolation match because Carmel sophomore Bailey Padgett (26-3) had to default because of an injury. The third-place finish helping Boesing earn a spot on the all-state first team for the third consecutive season.
The Highlander standout said her energy tank went dry during her matchup with Barnes after she won a 3-hour, 45-minute quarterfinal match against Columbus North’s Allie Smith on Friday. Each set in the quarterfinal ended up in a tiebreaker, as Boesing won 7-6(7-5), 6-7(6-8), 7-6(7-3).
“I didn’t have any energy,” Boesing said. “The girl I played today was tough to match up with. I felt I didn’t match up with her energy, but give her credit.”
Boesing and Barnes were tied at three in the first set before Barnes went on a 3-0 run to claim the set. But Boesing did make it easy for Barnes, as both players battled to deuce several times during the final two games of the set.
In the second set, Boesing (24-3) fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 and could not recover.
“I returned her serve well and I was breaking her serve,” Boesing said. “But from the beginning, I felt I had to find energy.”
Floyd Central head coach Rick Miller thought Boesing’s timing was affected by Friday’s match, where Smith did not hit the ball with a lot of velocity. That changed in Saturday’s semis against the hard-hitting Barnes. Miller also thought Boesing was worn out mentally after Friday’s marathon match.
“The best analogy I can come with is you have been used to seeing fastballs all season and then you throw in a pitcher who throws knuckleballs and change-ups. That’s what we saw (Friday),” Miller said. “That threw off her timing. It was not a physical thing — it was more mental. I think she got beat because of (Friday).
“(Barnes) is a good athlete and that had a lot to do with it. But I think the girl on Friday threw (Boesing) off.”
Miller said the lack of energy prevented Boesing to get on a run versus Barnes.
“Tennis is a lot of momentum,” Miller said. “Olivia hit a lot of great shots, but she did not have enough consistency in making those shots.”
Despite coming up short of winning the state singles championship, Boesing thinks this weekend’s state finals will make her a stronger player when she enters her senior year in 2013.
“It will make me work harder next year. It was probably a good learning experience for me,” Boesing said.
Miller says the state finals experience will help his star player down the road.
“It’s awesome — you can’t buy it,” Miller said about that experience. “Now, she knows how it feels to play in a Final Four. She’ll be stronger next year.
“She’s one of the premier players in the state. But I don’t want to hear that. I want her to be the premier player in the state. I want her to be the one that everybody worries about.”
Barnes lost in the state singles championship to Penn senior Alexandra Brinker, 6-4, 6-2. It was Barnes’ first loss of the season, as she ended the season with a 28-1 record. Brinker (24-1) defeated Padgett in Saturday’s other semifinal, 6-3, 6-2.
Highland juniors Abigail and Vanessa Madrigal won the state doubles championship on Saturday by downing Fort Wayne Dwenger’s Elizabeth Maxson and Audrey Range, 6-1, 6-2. In the doubles consolation match, Zionsville’s Autumn Fair and Kelly Mattingly knocked off Jasper’s Ashley Rogers and Elizabeth Theil, 7-5, 6-4.
