HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Floyd Central wins HHC again

Highlanders earn fifth-straight conference crown in win over Columbus East

COLUMBUS — The Floyd Central girls’ tennis team put forth one of its best efforts of the season to capture its fifth-straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship with a 5-0 victory over host Columbus East on Friday.

“They’ve been together since they were little girls, and this is beginning to look like my dream team. They’re gelling at the right time,” Floyd Central coach Rick Miller said. “They’re understanding that it’s not about power all the time. It’s about placement. Sometimes it’s about power. Sometimes it’s about spin. Sometimes it’s about speed, and effort, and one last hustle and man, today was just a wonderful step to make towards accumulating the experience we need to win a state championship.”

Olivia Boesing made short work of East’s Ashlee Hasson in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At two singles, Carmen Schreiber notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Megan Galle, while Dana Frank downed Riza Mineno, 6-0, 6-3.

“(Carmen) played a girl who I thought was one of the best athletes I’ve seen all year, and I thought Carmen really took it to her,” Miller said.

The team of Katherine Dauby and Whitney Batliner kept things going with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lauren Champion and Alexa Husmann, while the tandem of Chelsey Shackleford and Kadey Welch dropped Amanda Hashimoto and Pooja Pandita, 6-0, 6-2.

• New Washington toughs one out at Corydon: New Washington improved to 4-8 on the season with a hard-fought 4-1 victory at Corydon Central on Friday.

“I think our experience is finally starting to pay off,” New Wash coach Wayne Davis said. “We’ve played enough and been in enough of these situations to know that we can come back.”

The Mustangs got wins in two of the three singles matches, needing three sets to get it done in both cases. Courtney Amick turned back Rocio Hernando in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory, while Courtney Morgan overcame a first-set loss to down Ashleigh Showalter, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
