H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Pirates advance after 50-20 victory over Providence

CHARLESTOWN — The 37th annual Charlestown Holiday Tournament opened with the host Pirates cruising past the Providence, 50-20.

The Pirates forced 19 turnovers and used several second chance opportunities to advance to Saturday’s championship game against Silver Creek.

The Dragons, who defeated Clarksville 50-30 on Friday, edged Charlestown 47-46 in a thriller on Dec. 8.

Justice Burdin led both teams in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates. Kaitlynn Henning helped her counterpart with 13 points with six steals.

Both teams came out playing zone defenses. The Pioneers stuck with a 2-3 zone for most of the game, with Charlestown switching to a 1-3-1 matchup zone at times.

This caused both teams to give up multiple second chance opportunities.

“Providence did a good job keeping us out of the middle and we were struggling to knock down shots, but between quarters and halftime I told my team to keep playing our game,” Charlestown coach Sam Terrell said.

The game wasn’t always easy for the Pirates early in the game. They came out and had multiple turnovers with little pressure on them.

“We need to take care of the ball, slow down and play our game and not have unforced turnovers,” Terrell said.

Although the Pirates missed open shots and had unforced turnovers, their defense made the difference.

They allowed the Pioneers to only score five points in each quarter.

“Yeah, each day in practice we work hard in our defensive drills, and after the game that is the first thing my players told me,” Terrell said.

Charlestown scored most of their points in the paint and on second chance opportunities. For the game, they shot 17-for-43 from the field for 40 percent.

Unfortunately for Providence, it couldn’t get shots to fall. As a team, the Pioneers finished 7-for-37 from the field for 21 percent. They was led by sophomore Michaela Hoke, who finished with 6 points.

The Pioneers will play in the consolation game at 6 p.m. tonight against Clarksville.
