CHARLESTOWN — Charlestown had trouble hanging on to the ball. Jeffersonville had trouble putting the ball in the basket.

Doesn’t sound like the makings of an exciting contest — but to the contrary as Charlestown converted 8-of-10 free throws in the second overtime to propel the Pirates to a 48-43 victory over the Red Devils on Thursday at Charlestown Sports Arena.

Charlestown, which had turned the ball over eight times before halftime in building a 26-20 halftime lead, coughed it up that many times in the third quarter as Jeffersonville turned the tables and led 36-33 entering the final quarter.

The Pirates then coughed it up another 12 times to finish with 28. Jeffersonville, meanwhile, after making a very respectable 15-of-31 shots through three quarters, went ice cold. The Red Devils missed 23 consecutive shots until Aurreeshae Hines hit a 3-pointer with 1:46 left in the second overtime to pull her team to within 44-43.

Jeff only coughed it up once in the second overtime period, but it was a costly one coming with 47 seconds left and trailing 45-43.

“We turned the ball over tonight. But they weren’t crucial ones like we’ve had earlier in the year, such as our two on-point losses to Silver Creek,” said Charlestown coach Sam Terrell. “I thought that Jeff came in with a good game plan in trying to stop (Kaitlynn) Henning and (Justice) Burdin.

“We turned it over tonight, but we seemed to hold on to it long enough to get a shot or get fouled. Tonight, everyone we put on the floor contributed to the victory. It’s finally good to win one like this.”

Charlestown was led in scoring by Henning with 19 points. Burdin added 11. Haley Vogen led Jeffersonville with 16 points. Hines added 10.

It was Charlestown’s Jasmine Harvey that tied the game at 39 in regulation on a basket with 2:12 left. Each team scored only one point in the first overtime, with Henning and Jeff’s Nycia Ford making a free throw apiece.

“Charlestown played a pretty good game and did what they had to do to win,” said Jeffersonville coach Matt Pait. “It’s disappointing when you miss shots, but it’s also disappointing playing 8 on 5. That was some of the worse officiating I’ve ever seen. I’m proud of how my team played, but the officials took it from us.”

Both teams will return to action on Saturday. Charlestown (4-8, 0-4 Mid-Southern Conference) will host Brownstown (4-5, 3-2), while Jeffersonville (5-7) will travel to Castle (11-3).
