NEW WASHINGTON — The New Washington girls’ basketball team clinched a share of the Southern Athletic Conference championship on Tuesday night at Matthews Gymnasium by walloping Crothersville (1-17, 0-5 SAC), 80-21. It was New Wash’s first conference title since the 2008-09 season.

Senior guard Kriston Sarver paced the Class A No. 9 Mustangs (15-2, 4-0) with 18 points, while New Washington junior Courtney Amick recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Mustang junior Caroline Ricks had 12 points. Also for New Washington, Ashley Johnson registered 10 points and a game-high seven assists and Brooke Abbott pulled down 10 boards.

The Mustangs can clinch the outright conference title on Thursday with a victory at Lanesville (10-7, 3-1).

• Pioneers need buzzer-beater to defeat winless Crawford: With four seconds left in regulation, sophomore Lillian Hughes received an inbounds pass in the lane and hit a 4-foot jumper at the buzzer to give host Providence a 35-33 win over Crawford County (0-19). It was Hughes’ only basket of the game.

The Pioneers’ Meredith Endris scored 10 points. She tallied eight in the third quarter to help Providence cut a 23-10 halftime deficit down to 27-24 at the end of the stanza. Teammate Nichole Tucker chipped in eight.

“It was an ugly start by us. We weren’t in the game at all,” Pioneers’ coach Brad Burden said. “In the second half, we applied more ball pressure and made some shots.”

• Highlanders lose at Jennings: Floyd Central shot 24 percent from the field in a 51-41 loss at Jennings County on Tuesday night. Despite the porous field-goal percentage, the Highlanders shot an efficient 20-of-23 from the free-throw line (87 percent).

Three Floyd Central players scored in double figures. Madison Kaiser had 12 points, Tori Kingsley tallied 11 and Brooke Hinton poured in 10.

With the score tied at 19 at halftime, the Panthers (6-11, 2-5 Hoosier Hills Conference) proceeded to outscore the Highlanders 32-22 in the second half.

“We didn’t hit shots. We couldn’t score,” Floyd Central coach Kirk Hamsley said. “We had good shots, but they just didn’t fall. We played uninspired at the end.”

• Hornets snap losing streak: Host Henryville broke a two-game losing streak with a 37-25 victory against Clarksville.

No Hornets scored in double figures, as Jasmine Harrell and Emily Hollis each tallied nine points. Teammate Chelsea LaMotte scored eight.

“In the first half, we didn’t do a very good job with help-side defense,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “In the second half, we picked up our intensity and got in passing lanes. Offensively, we did a better job attacking the basket.”

Haley Jenkins topped the Generals’ scoring column with a game-high 10 points. Bailey Sharp chipped in nine.

• Braves topple West Washington: Visiting Borden picked up its third straight victory and its fourth in five games with a 49-32 triumph on Tuesday at West Washington (9-8).

Two Braves scored in double figures. Junior Abby Ellis tallied 16 points, while Carson Casey chipped in 12. Teammates Leslie Beatty and Kristen Nestor each scored seven.

“We played really well all the way through,” Borden coach Terry Rademacher said. “We did a great job on defense. It was a pretty solid effort. Abby Ellis played well, and Carson Casey did a good job rebounding.”
