JEFFERSONVILLE —
Trent Astle struck out 10, scattered five hits, and delivered an RBI single to lead Jeffersonville to a 2-0 victory over Floyd Central Thursday night in the first round of the Class 4A Jeffersonville Baseball Sectional.
Jeff scored the only run it would need in the first inning. Isaac Crafton was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a fly ball to center field by Drew Ellis and scored on Astle’s single to right.
The Red Devils (16-7) added an insurance run in the fifth on a long home run to left by Ellis.
Astle (6-3) was in control most of the game. Floyd Central did make a little noise in the bottom of the seventh. After a long flyout to centerfield by Colton Kimm, Ross Lundy reached on an infield hit. But Astle struck out Tanner Wortham swinging and Cody Sunderhaus looking to end the game and preserve the victory.
Kyle Sipes (5-3) suffered the loss for the Highlanders. He gave up one run in 4 2/3 innings of work. He was relieved by Matt Powers, who went the rest of the way and allowed only one run — Ellis’ home run.
The Red Devils had several scoring opportunities but failed to deliver. They stranded 13 runners in the game, including the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings.
The win not only lifted Jeff into the sectional semifinals, but it also avenged an earlier loss to the Highlanders.
The Red Devils will meet Bedford North Lawrence at 10 a.m. Monday. The Stars eliminated Jennings County 4-3 in nine innings in Thursday’s opener. New Albany and Seymour will meet in the second semifinal at 12:30 p.m. The sectional championship is slated for 6 p.m.
Floyd Central finished the season 15-12.
