NASHVILLE —
Silver Creek’s boys and girls both advanced to next Saturday’s Brown County Semistate with top-three finishes at the Brown County Regional on Saturday.
Columbus North’s boys and girls dominated both races, but the Dragons boys finished second to the Bull Dogs.
The Dragons scored 90 points, 21 ahead of third-place Seymour.
“The boys ran a tremendous race,” Silver Creek coach Darrell Kingery said. “Most people thought we would be fourth or fifth in the meet, but our guys wanted to make sure that we had another week to get better. It was a good day to be a Dragon.”
Four Silver Creek runners finish in the top 19, led by a ninth-place finish from Isaak Haas, who completed the course in 16:21. Jason Fruits was next in 10th in 16:30.
Evan Strom finished 16th and Drew Roberts was 19th for the Dragons.
“Everyone was at or had a person best today,” Kingery said.
The Dragons will compete in a tough Brown County Semistate next Saturday. Kingery believes that if his team is at its best, it has a chance to make a run at a state berth.
“We look forward to another week of great practices and an opportunity to earn a spot at the state meet,” he said. “I’m sure our four seniors will be focused on that opportunity.”
Henryville finished 10th in the boys’ race. The Hornets were paced by Jacob Hedrick’s 40th-place finish.
New Washington’s Adan Diaz placed 35th.
Silver Creek’s girls finished third, 18 points behind runner-up Seymour, by placing four girls in the top 17 spots. Brittany Sharp finished 11th in 19:58, Maggie Shields was 14th in 20:11, Mackenzie Crouch crossed in 15th in 20:21 and Jessica Backherms’ 20:51 was good for 17th.
“The girls also ran a tremendous race with everyone running at or bettering their personal best,” Kingery said. “Both teams were focused and ready to run today and I was extremely pleased.”
Like the Dragon boys, Creek’s girls will return to Nashville for next Saturday’s semistate with a berth in the state meet on the line.
“The girls also want to make that last step to the state and are eager for next week,” Kingery said. “The nice thing about both teams is that we can run faster and we will have to next Saturday.”
Henryville junior Sadie Spears, who was the Southwestern Sectional champion on Tuesday, was surrounded by Columbus North runners in her sixth-place finish. She ran the Brown County course in 19:16.
Spears will join Silver Creek’s girls at next Saturday’s semistate. Hornet teammate Megan O’Lone finished 49th.
Charlestown sophomore Whitney Andrews finished just outside of qualifying in 18th spot.
