JEFFERSONVILLE — Wilson Elementary School’s boys’ basketball team’s big three did a real number on Bridgepoint Thursday night. The Wildcat trio of Cameron Northern, Michael Byrnes and Michael Minton combined to score 42 points during Wilson’s 47-25 win over the Bears in the Greater Clark County Schools Championship game at William S. Johnson Arena.
Northern had 21 points, while Byrnes and Minton scored 10 each for the Wildcats, who capped a perfect season by winning the school’s first championship in three years.
“We’ve got awesome, awesome athletes,” Wilson head coach Jeff Farmer said. “I’m the (physical education) teacher (at Wilson) and I could tell back when they were in second grade there was a chance these kids could be something else. They’re special for this age group.”
Minton and Byrnes combined for all of the Wildcats’ 14 points in the opening quarter as Wilson rolled to a 14-7 lead through one.
Northern came off the bench and had all nine points in the second period, and the Wildcat defense held the Bears to zero as the lead expanded to 23-7 at intermission.
“It’s been a big year for us at Wilson,” Farmer said. “Both our boys’ and girls’ teams had undefeated years and won this championship — I couldn’t be prouder of them.
“We’re lucky, we’ve got great kids and the parents here really get it. We have a meeting at the start of the year and we tell them what we expect and they’re very, very positive and they make the season even more enjoyable.”
Jordan Barnett led Bridgepoint with 11 points and DeKaleb Brown added nine for the Bears, who went unbeaten in the regular season and won the GCCS National Division title.
