Floyd Central clinched at least a share of their first Hoosier Hills Conference championship since 1984 on Tuesday as it defeated Jennings County 59-44.
Camry Hinton scored 15 points and Jennifer Smith added 14 for the Highlanders, who remained unbeaten with three games remaining in the regular season. Morgan Rookstool added 12 and Brigid Morrissey finished with 10 for the Highlanders (18-0), will travel to Providence on Saturday. Floyd can clinch its first outright conference title in school history on Tuesday night when it travels to Columbus East.
• Owls too much for Bulldogs: Erin Murphy scored a game high 22 points as Seymour handed New Albany its sixth straight loss of the season.
No Bulldog reached double figures in the setback. Kameran Cole led the team with eight points in the loss.
“We played hard and it was a close ballgame into the fourth quarter,” said Bulldog coach Amanda Carmichael. “We allowed their big weapons to get too many good looks at the bucket and they took advantage.”
New Albany (9-10) will travel to Evansville Bosse on Saturday.
• Borden holds off CAI: Erin Mikel scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had six assists to help Borden upend Christian Academy of Indiana, 46-41.
The Braves (6-11) raced to a 32-18 lead at halftime and led by as many as 18 in the third quarter but saw the host rally within five by the end of the contest.
“Earlier in the year, we might have let this one get away from us,” said Borden coach Charlie Gardner. “We made it interesting, but we made the plays we needed to make to hold on.”
Rachel Boesing had 15 and Kelsey Biggs finished with 12 for the Warriors (6-14). CAI will travel to Orleans on Monday.
• Charlestown downs Clarksville: Host Charlestown set a season high in points scored and placed five players in double figures as it defeated visiting Clarksville on Thursday night, 95-40.
The Pirates scored 56 points in the opening two quarters and followed that up by limiting the Generals to just 10 points after halftime as they won for the third time in their past four contest.
“We’ve really worked toward being more aggressive,” said Pirate coach Rick Myers. “Offensively we’ve wanted to attack the basket more and we’ve been able to do that.”
Amanda Miller made 11-of-17 field goals en route to scoring a game-high 29 points. Brittany Bennison collected 18 for the Pirates (11-8) and Jenah Sherrill had 14 in the victory.
Alicia Zollman and Jennifer Watson both also added 10 each for Charlestown.
Charlestown also shot a season-best 23-of-25 from the foul line.
Clarksville had eight 3-pointers in the opening half, five of which came from Cassandra Mulford — who had a team-high 21 in the loss.
Charlestown will face North Harrison on Tuesday. Clarksville (3-15) hosts Borden on Tuesday.
• Mustangs rebound with win: New Washington was able to snap a two-game losing skid with a 48-36 win over Lanesville at Jim Matthews Gymnasium.
Chloe Franklin scored 16 points, Casey Johnson had 14 and Kriston Sarver finished with 13 in the win for the Mustangs (11-7).
“We played much better,” said Mustang assistant coach Kirsti Holloway. “As a group we defended better than we have been.”
New Wash will travel to Pekin Eastern on Tuesday.
• Visiting Pekin Eastern led 32-16 at halftime and placed three in double figures as it defeated Henryville, 62-35.
The Musketeers canned five 3-pointers in the game. Abby Taylor had nine in the loss for the Hornets (8-12).
Henryville will travel to Madison Shawe on Tuesday.
