AUSTIN — Providence strung together 11 runs in the second inning and coasted to a 15-1 victory at Austin on Monday.

“We did well. We adjusted to the things that we needed to and made the defensive plays when we had opportunities,” Providence coach Sean Payne said. Any time in a blowout, that’s what you want to see.”

The Pioneers only needed eight hits to get their runs.

For Providence, Jordyn Stengel was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Meredith Endris was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Lillian Hughes had a two-run home run in the contest, while Karly Baumann needed just one hit in two official plate appearances to drive in three runs.

Sierra Collett evened her record to 4-4, pitching four innings and striking out six.

Providence (10-10) travels to Seymour on Thursday.

• Silver Creek thumps Henryville: Silver Creek’s Shayla Cravens held Henryville to just one hit in the Dragons’ 10-0 home victory on Monday.

The Dragons needed just five innings to put away the Hornets. Silver Creek’s onslaught started in the home second, when it sent 11 batters to the plate to pick up six runs to put the game out of reach early on.

For Silver Creek, Kira Jamros was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Mackenzie Bush was 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Cravens was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Cravens struck out eight Henryville batters in five innings of work. She walked one.

“She was pretty well spotting her fast ball today, and then she was mixing in her curve,” Silver Creek assistant coach Terry Purlee said. “She threw pretty well.”

Silver Creek (11-5) travels to Scottsburg on Wednesday. Henryville (8-8) hosts Crothersville today.

• Charlestown edges Madison: Charlestown got the best of host Madison in a rain-shortened, five-inning game on Monday, 3-1.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman said. “We got the game in, and I thought Alyssa Price did a good job of coming up with runners in scoring position.”

Alli Webster improved her record to 12-3, allowing just one run on three hits. She struck out eight and walked none.  

Offensively, Alyssa Price was the straw that stirred the drink for Charlestown. She was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI. She has a total of 23 RBI on the season.

Charlestown (13-3) travels to New Washington on Wednesday.



BASEBALL

• Floyd Central sweeps split doubleheader: Floyd Central won two home games on Saturday.

In the early game, the Highlanders trounced Bedford North Lawrence, 9-1, before taking down Brownstown Central in five innings, 11-1.

Colton Kimm shinned for the Highlanders. He improved to 1-1 on the mound in the Brownstown game and doubled in both contests.

Floyd Central had 21 hits combined between the two contests.

Floyd Central (9-7) hosts Tell City today.



GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Henryville defeats CAI: Henryville took a 4-1 victory over Christian Academy of Indiana on Monday.

“We came out a bit flat tonight,” Henryville coach Brian Consley said. “I think our week off with no matches caused a little rust, but the girls pulled it together and did enough to come out with the victory.”

Henryville’s Katie Cleveland got the best of Courtney Heishman, 6-1, 6-3, while Jordan Jeffers downed CAI’s Emily Mitchell, 6-2, 6-4.

The Hornets swept the doubles positions. At No. 1 doubles, Lauren Sinn and Shelby Sinn defeated Kacie Arrell and Courtney Brown, 6-4, 6-1. Natalie Bobay and Alicia Lindley teamed to get a three-set victory over CAI’s Tamar Kelley and Callie Allison, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The Warriors’ only win came at the No. 1 singles position, where Rachel Jones turned back Casey Guernsey, 6-3, 6-2.

Henryville hosts Madison Shawe on Wednesday, while CAI hosts New Washington on Friday.

• Reilly wins it for Jeff: Returning to the court after a lightning-shortened match on Saturday, Jeffersonville No. 1 singles player Morgan Reilly got the match-deciding point in a 10-8 third-set tiebreaker over New Albany’s Erin Kanii.

The final score was 7-5, 6-7 (7-3), 10-8.

Reilly’s win over Kanii gave Jeffersonville a 3-2 meet victory over the Bulldogs, avenging a 4-1 loss early in the season.
