Justin Conrad tied a school record with eight 3-pointers as the Charlestown boys’ basketball team shot past Mid-Southern Conference rival Austin 76-62 on Thursday.
Conrad scored a game-high 27 points as the Pirates improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the MSC.
After Charlestown fell behind 9-4 after the first quarter with Aaron Daniel on the bench in foul trouble, Conrad knocked down six of his eight 3-pointers in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 30-29 halftime lead.
“In the first quarter, we couldn’t buy a bucket,” Charlestown coach Sean Smith explained. “We didn’t panic and Justin stepped up. Once he hit the first one, he got on a roll there. He has practices like that all the time, where he gets on a roll and can really fill it up.”
After taking the halftime lead, the Pirates pulled away with a 22-12 advantage in the third quarter.
Despite the foul trouble, Daniel finished with 10 points, eight assists and eight rebounds. Chris Braun added 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Former Henryville Hornet Devin Richey led the Eagles with 17 points.
Charlestown will host Corydon Central (10-4, 3-2 MSC) on Saturday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
• Borden closes with six straight wins: Borden outscored host Springs Valley 13-6 in the fourth quarter to close the regular season with six straight wins, 52-44 over the Blackhawks on Thursday.
“Clearly, we’ve played a lot of good basketball,” Braves coach Terry Rademacher said of the winning streak. “I’m pleased with the way things finished.”
Borden took a 20-15 lead after one quarter and led 28-26 at the half. Valley pulled within 39-38 after three quarters before the Braves pulled away.
“We had to execute in the fourth quarter and we did,” Rademacher said.
Abby Ellis and Leslie Beatty led Borden with 17 points apiece. Shelby Kirchgessner added nine. The Hawks (9-11) were led by Kiana Wininger’s 11 points.
Borden (13-6) will open sectional play Tuesday at New Washington against the host Mustangs. Class A No. 8 New Wash beat the two-time defending sectional champion Braves 49-46 at the same venue on Nov. 27.
“We’re ready to work a couple of days [in practice] and be ready for Tuesday night,” Rademacher said.
