WRESTLING: Three area wrestlers advance at state

Three of the nine area wrestlers in the IHSAA State Finals survived Friday night’s first round at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Floyd Central senior Cooper Samuels kept his undefeated record intact, pinning Pendleton Heights’ Matt Todd at the three-minute mark to prevail in the 171-pound division.

New Albany senior J.T. Jenkins also won his first-round 171 match. He defeated New Palestine’s Max Begovich by a 6-3 decision.

Jenkins’ teammate Ivan Rodriguez prevailed in the 145 division. The senior, who is undefeated, beat Goshen’s Braden Barkes by an 8-6 decision.

All three wrestlers compete in the quarterfinals today. Samuels will take on Mishawaka’s Caleb Norville, Jenkins will face undefeated Branden James of Culver Academies, and Rodriguez will wrestle Anderson Highland’s Sammy Bennett.

Two New Albany seniors saw their high school careers come to an end on Friday. The Bulldogs’ Nick Oxley lost in the 125 division to Perry Meridian’s Brian Vest, 9-5. Teammate Brent Kaelin was pinned by Columbia City’s Peter Deutsch at the 4:12 mark in the 152 class.

Floyd Central senior Tyler Alvey lost a 25-10 decision to Hanover Central’s Andrew Howe in the 160 division. At 119, Charlestown’s Eddie Duran fell 3-2 to Elkhart Memorial’s Brandon Harvey. At 189, Providence junior Ethan Cook suffered a 6-0 setback to Elkhart Memorial’s Stephen Stahl. At 285, Jeffersonville’s Jon Clark lost to Glenn’s Craig Fitzgerald, 17-4.
