HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Knox leads Hornets to early victory

Allison Knox scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, leading Henryville to a 68-22 win over Rock Creek Christian Academy in Pool 1 of the Henryville Tipoff Classic.

Abby Taylor added 13 points, Tyna Harbold had nine and Jasmine Harrell seven for the Hornets, who led 34-5 at the half.

Katie Guernsey scored three points and had a team-high four assists for Henryville.

“We played 11 kids and they all seemed to respond well (to the new season),” Hornets coach Brian Guernsey said.

Kelli Davidson had a team-high 12 points for Rock Creek, which travels to Christian Academy of Indiana on Thursday. Henryville hosts 0-1 Medora on the same night.

• CAI overcomes rough second period: After being outscored 11-5 in the second quarter, Christian Academy of Indiana’s girls basketball team outscored Medora 33-13 in the second half to score a 55-32 season-opening victory.

The Warriors, who led 15-8 after the first period, became a “typical young team” in the second period, CAI coach Tim Coomer said.

“We jumped off to a big lead, then we got out of control,” Coomer said. “I had to call a couple of timeouts and get them settled down.”

In the second half, Coomer said CAI used a strong man-to-man defense to hold the Hornets to six points in the third and seven in the fourth.

Kelsey Biggs led all scorers with 20 points. The Warriors’ only senior also had six rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Rachel Boesing added six points and 21 rebounds.

“She’s amazing, the way she plays inside,” Coomer said of Boesing. “She’s slender, but she’s strong.”

The Warriors had 64 total rebounds on the night.

CAI will face host Rock Creek Christian Academy on Thursday in Game 2 of pool play in the Henryville Tipoff Classic.

• Pioneers come up short after fast start: Providence led 13th-ranked North Harrison 15-11 after one quarter and 22-20 at the half, but a poor third quarter cost the Pioneers a victory.

The Cats outscored Providence 20-11 in the third period, thanks to poor foul shooting by the Pioneers. Providence connected on just 10 of 25 from the foul line on the night.

“We just couldn’t convert when it mattered,” Providence coach Brad Burden said. “We played well defensively, but we just made too many mistakes.”

After the poor third period, Providence took a 2-point lead with three minutes to play behind the sharp shooting of Megan Eve.

Eve led the Pioneers with 14 points and hit four 3-point shots. She also had seven steals. Leah White added eight points and six assists, and Katy Flanagan had 10 points.

The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday when they host Class 2A, No. 5 Austin.

• Borden survives in overtime: Borden outscored West Washington 16-4 in the fourth quarter and 7-1 in overtime to down the Senators, 36-30, in its season opener.

Erin Mikel scored five of her 20 points in overtime and hit eight of her 10 foul shots in the fourth quarter to help force overtime.

“She put us back in it,” Borden coach Charlie Gardner said of his sophomore.

Mikel added a team-high nine rebounds and made 10 of 13 free throws in the contest.

McKenna Williams added 10 points for the victorious Braves. Bethany Popp led the Senators with 11 points.

The Braves host Silver Creek on Thursday.
