> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Veteran Jeffersonville High School head baseball coach Al Rabe was notified in a meeting with new JHS principal Jim Sexton on Tuesday that he will not be recommended to the Greater Clark County Schools board to continue as the Red Devils’ manager.
The Greater Clark board’s next meeting will be this coming Tuesday, but it is yet to be determined if a new coach for Jeff High baseball will be recommended to the board at that time.
Rabe was one of an estimated 26 head and assistant coaches who were given letters that asked them to go through the reapplication process if they plan on coaching during the 2010-11 school year.
Rabe said in an Evening News article in the June 15 edition that it was the first time he had gotten a reapplication letter since he retired from JHS as a physical education teacher in 2007.
“I’m not the recommendation of Jim Sexton,” Rabe said in a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s up to the school board now. It’s been out of my hands since I was given my letter of reapplication.”
In his 27 years as a high school baseball coach at Boonville, Castle and Jeff, Rabe has compiled a career record of 488-334. Plus he won 12 sectional titles and five regional championships.
Rabe became the Red Devils’ head coach in 1993. In his 18 seasons at Jeff, Rabe has compiled a 331-230 record and guided the Red Devils to six sectional championships, with the last coming in 2008. Rabe helped Jeff win three regional crowns and one semistate, which was in 1998.
Rabe led the Red Devils to the IHSAA State Finals twice. In 1998, Jeff made its only state championship game appearance, as it lost the 4A final to Penn at Victory Field in Indianapolis, 16-4.
In 2003, the Red Devils fell in the 4A state semifinals to eventual state champion McCutcheon, 7-4.
For the past few seasons, Rabe was the president of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Along with being the head baseball coach at Jeff, Rabe was a longtime assistant coach for the Red Devil boys’ basketball program from 1992-2005. Rabe was on the coaching staff for Jeff’s 1993 state championship team.
