FC girls can’t hold off Madison after fast start

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Christian Academy senior Davonte King had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors to their first victory of the season, 61-49 over Henryville.

“He had a great summer for us and he struggled in the first game [a 62-54 loss at Lanesville],” CAI coach Steve Kerberg said of King. “I think that’s the kind of player he can be. He’s a great rebounder and he’s turning into a great scorer. The great thing is he can still get so much better.”

Even with their first win of the season, Kerberg wasn’t satisfied with the Warriors’ performance, which saw them jump out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter and a 28-18 halftime advantage.

“I’m not happy with the way we’re playing right now,” he said. “But it’s early in the season and I believe it’s things we can fix. I believe we’re going to be a good basketball team.”

Henryville senior Tyler Collins led all scorers with 32 points, including four 3-points.

“Tyler’s going to have to score for us to be successful,” Hornets first-year coach Dan Carmony said. “He was aggressive to the basket and he hit some outside shots. He got to the foul line a lot, which is something I wanted to see. I just wish he would have hit a few more [free throws].”

Henryville is now 0-2, but Carmony likes the progress the Hornets made following a 75-24 loss to Silver Creek in their opener.

“We played better,” he said. “We still had too many turnovers, but we made some progress. They’ll get there. They will get there.”

Henryville travels to North Harrison (0-1) for its next contest on Saturday. On the same night, CAI hosts New Wash, which opens its season on Friday at Rock Creek.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

• Highlanders lose early lead: Floyd Central jumped out to an early 19-5 lead against Class 3A No. 9 Madison, but the unbeaten Cubs roared back for a 64-57 victory on Tuesday.

Floyd had a 19-12 advantage after one quarter, but Madison (5-0) outscored the Highlanders 23-12 in the second quarter and led 35-31 at the half.

“We played well early and got some easy baskets,” Floyd coach Kirk Hamsley said. “Madison did a nice job of changing defenses and we just didn’t knock shots down.”

Riley Kaiser scored 18 points and Madison Kaiser added 17 for the Highlanders. Madison’s Hannah Cain led all scorers with 21 points.

NEXT: Floyd Central (2-2, 1-1 HHC) at Southwestern, Saturday.

WRESTLING

• Pioneers defeat CAI: Providence defeated Christian Academy 54-24 on Tuesday night. Winning for the Pioneers was Josh Murner at 132 pounds, Conner Evanczyk at 145, Brett Kempf at 152, Brendan Tucker at 160, Jason Murner at 170, Dorian Noel at 182, Matthew Hayes at 195, Devan Evanczyk at 220 and heavyweight Justin Wheatley.
