H.S. GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Floyd overcomes sloppiness to beat Dragons, 58-34

FLOYDS KNOBS — It’s the season of giving and there were lots of giving away of the

basketball Wednesday night at Floyd Central.

In a game that saw 63 combined turnovers, the Highlanders defeated South Oldham 58-34 in an ugly game on Joe Hinton Court.

“We were sad,” Floyd head coach Kirk Hamsley said. “We wouldn’t rotate on defense and just didn’t play well. Whether it was lack of energy or what — I don’t know. We didn’t play like we need to play to beat good teams.”

It was messy from the beginning as the contest saw 11 combined giveaways in the opening four minutes. Brooke Hinton then broke a 4-4 stalemate with back-to-back 3-pointers as the Highlanders (4-2) finished the first period with a 10-4 run for a 14-8 lead.

“We opened the game throwing the ball away when we had a layup,” Hamsley said. “We’re just throwing the ball away and not ready to take care of the ball against good teams.”

Floyd’s post duo of Tori Kingsley and Niki Bruno combined for nine points in the second frame as the hosts pushed its lead to 29-17 at intermission. The lead could have been bigger as the Highlanders shot just 3-of-10 from the foul line in the first 16 minutes.

“Right now that is normal for us from the line,” said Hamsley, whose team only hit 6-of-17 overall from the stripe. “We’re shooting about 50 percent on free throws. That has to get better.”

Floyd, who is now 6-1 all-time versus South Oldham, put the game out of reach in the third as Bruno scored six of her 11 and the Dragons shot just 2-of-12 out of the locker room. The visitors didn’t score until the 1:57 mark in the third.

“We wanted to go inside more,” Hamsley said. “We had an advantage in there tonight. We got the ball where we needed to more in the second half but we just didn’t make shots.”

The home team placed three players in double figures as Madison Kaiser led all scorers with 14. Kingsley added 13 to go along with Bruno’s 11.

The Green and Gold dominated the glass, outrebounding South Oldham 48-23. The Floyd defense held the Dragons to just 31 percent shooting overall and 1-of-13 from beyond the arc.

“We struggled offensively,” said Hamsley, whose team shot 43 percent from the field. “We had us 8 for 24 on put back shots around the basket. We just didn’t take care of business on those things tonight. We didn’t show up to play.”

The Highlanders are back in action Saturday hosting North Harrison.
