NEW ALBANY —
This is in response to the article in The Tribune on March 7, about increased police patrols in downtown New Albany by Indiana State Police.
I’d like to offer a simple solution to this issue: don’t drive drunk!
The ISP has increased their patrols here due to the high number of traffic-related deaths. As the article pointed out, there were six fatal crashes in New Albany Township in 2008, and the State Police therefore “targeted” our area in an attempt to resolve this situation. That’s their job — to protect and serve us, the public, and I find it rather disturbing that so many have a hard time differentiating between those who would help us and those who, through their careless and irresponsible actions, would hurt us.
As a result of the ISP efforts, there were zero traffic-related deaths in the township. As a citizen of New Albany, I appreciate their efforts for it could easily have been me or one of my loved ones killed as a result of a drunken driver’s irresponsible act.
I sincerely doubt that I’m alone in my gratitude toward the State Police. I believe most New Albanians appreciate the efforts of not only the ISP, but also the hard work done by the fine men and women of the New Albany Police Department, as well as the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, in protecting us and our loved ones. While I have no doubt that the latter can (and do) do a fine job ensuring our safety, I appreciate the fact that the ISP cares enough for us to help keep our streets safe, and if it meant saving just one innocent life, I’d happily welcome the National Guard, Army, and Marine Corps to join in the patrols.
In conclusion, I’d rather see a drunk driver serve the rest of his or her life behind bars than see one of my loved ones in an early grave because of someone’s careless, foolish actions. If you don’t want to go to jail, then don’t break the law. How daggone hard of a concept is that?
