Reader points out signs of ROCK’s presence



Signs, signs, everywhere signs. Those of us who have been following the efforts to regulate Theatair X for the last 18 months have seen the signs.

Of course, the first signs were the porn shop’s own billboards along Interstate 65. They have screamed “XXX!!!” in tasteful crimson and yellow, seemingly for years. Drivers and passersby were promised harmless, adults-only fun and that Southern Indiana is, well, a swinging place.

Then came the ROCK billboards, the signs that suggested not all was well inside the walls of Theatair X: “Breeding Predators Daily,” “Someone’s Daughter,” and “Garbage In, Garbage Out,” were some of the slogans.

The ugly truth about pornography and the sex industry began to be confronted, and questions began to be asked of local authorities.

Meanwhile, the marquee in front of Theatair X became a literal sign of that civic pressure — although, for some reason, there are still few signs of activity at 2000 Broadway — when the following was spelled out a few weeks ago: “What Do You Find Under A Rock? Dirt.”

I guess that was supposed to be a dig at ROCK, pardon the expression. Since I know Theatair X is all about the First Amendment, I’m sure they’ll appreciate my suggestions for future marquee slogans:

Does Your Wife Know You’re Here?

Don’t Wear Your Good Shoes!

DVDs — $10; peep shows — $5; and your self respect — priceless.

For those who understand just how harmful “establishments” like Theatair X are to women, children, families and communities, there are really only two marquee signs that work for us: “In Compliance,” or better yet, “For Sale.”

Harbeson should respect the right to speak up



Concerning Debbie Harbeson’s recent column, I wonder if she favors other groups standing for what they believe in?

When the ACLU battles for their secular principles, is Ms. Harbeson writing articles asking them to stop what their doing? When PETA is protesting outside a church because YUM’s president goes there, is she also asking them to leave well enough alone? Is ROCK not supposed to exist? And if she thinks they have a right to exist, then what should are they supposed to do?

I assume she thinks we should remain silent and simply teach our children at home the dangers of pornography. But I, as a Christian, cannot keep silent. I will continue to fight for decency in our culture and Ms. Harbeson should respect people’s right to do so.
