New trial date for Luckett

Woman, 75, accused of shooting son-in-law in New Albany home

NEW ALBANY — What was supposed to be a change of plea hearing in a murder trial turned into the judge setting a new trial date.

Nettie M. Luckett, 75, is accused of shooting and killing her son-in-law, Douglas Randolph, 49, in August at her New Albany home along Culbertson Avenue.

She was scheduled to have a trial April 2. Relatives showed up on that day, but the trial had been postponed. She was scheduled to appear in court again Thursday afternoon, for a change of plea hearing. However, Luckett’s attorney, Pat Biggs, announced there would not be a change from not guilty to a guilty plea.

Judge J. Terrence Cody set a new trial date for 8:30 a.m. on June 18.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the first officers that arrived on the scene after the shooting found Luckett standing in front of her house. When asked if there was a problem, she reportedly said she just shot her son-in-law. Randolph was found dead on the floor between the hallway and kitchen. A Taurus .38-caliber handgun, which had two fired rounds and three unfired rounds, was left on the kitchen table.

An autopsy showed Randolph was shot once in the back of the head, and Floyd County Coroner Leslie Knable said it appeared he was shot from close range. Luckett reportedly fired two shots, with the second not hitting anyone.

Prosecutor Keith Henderson said previously that they had ruled out the possibility that the shooting was an accident or that Luckett was acting in self-defense, though he couldn’t give specifics, citing the ongoing investigation.

Henderson also said previously that police received 911 calls from Luckett and neighbors, who had heard the shooting.

According to court records, Luckett purchased the gun July 9, 2011, at a New Albany store.

Biggs had no comment for this story.
