Police standoff ends peacefully

Man being evicted from home involved in altercation with father

SELLERSBURG — A 27-year-old Sellersburg man was arrested Tuesday evening after a two-hour standoff with police ended peacefully.

Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills said police received a call at 4:46 p.m. following a domestic disturbance between a father and son on the 3200 block of Magnolia Court.

Police then received word that John Pyle had shut himself in the residence and that there were numerous weapons in the home.

Dozens of police vehicles, including SWAT officers and negotiators, flooded into the normally quiet Southern Estates subdivision, which is in the part of Sellersburg located in Floyd County.

Mills said officers had been to the house last week as well. He said Pyle was going through the legal process of being evicted from the home by his parents.

On Tuesday morning, Magistrate Daniel Burke had issued a protective order against Pyle by his father. Sheriff’s department officers delivered the notice to the residence. Since Pyle was not at the house, the officers left the documents on the door.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Pyle reportedly broke into the house through the garage and became involved in a physical altercation with his father. Pyle’s father then called 911.

At one point, Pyle reportedly said he would not come out unless someone came in and killed him. However, Mills said Pyle did not seem suicidal or threatening toward police as negotiations continued.

“He just said he wasn’t going to come out,” Mills said. “He said he had a bad run in with police out there in L.A., but he didn’t go into details. I assume he meant California.”

Neighbors said Pyle had recently returned to Sellersburg after living in Los Angeles.

Police were concerned because Pyle’s parents reported there being shotguns, rifles and handguns inside the house.

After lengthy discussions with negotiator Matt Hall, Pyle agreed to surrender and exited the home providing no resistance to officers around 7 p.m.

Mills said he was pleased with a peacefully relatively quick resolution. No one was injured.

“It was just good negotiation and fortunately a good outcome. We always want safety for everyone involved,” Mills said.

Mills said Pyle could face several charges, including invasion of privacy and criminal mischief.
