JEFFERSONVILLE —
A Jeffersonville house was burned to the ground Tuesday morning, and two others suffered minor damage after a lawn mower apparently caught fire.
The fire began before 9 a.m. at 1215 Sandstone Drive. McCulloch Chief Fire Inspector Tom Sellmer Jr. said the first responding crews could see the fire from Allison Lane, and the home was fully involved when they arrived.
The daughter of the homeowner had been cutting her neighbor’s grass when she pushed the lawn mower into the corner of her garage.
“We may have had a gas cap that wasn’t 100 percent sealed,” Sellmer said. “Fumes escaped and hit a spark plug.”
A combination of the extreme heat in a closed garage likely contributed to the fire. Sellmer said it is advised that people leave their mowers outside to cool before storing them in the garage.
Sellmer said the daughter was able to escape uninjured. No one else was home. Family members said that a pet cat is missing after the fire.
The two adjacent homes also had “superficial damage” caused by heat transfer. The siding melted off the house.
The house where the fire began was a total loss.
