Indiana’s wind power industry faces unclear future

WEST LAFAYETTE — Indiana’s once-booming wind power industry is facing an uncertain future as Congress debates whether to renew a tax credit that’s set to expire this year.

Indiana Renewable Energy Association board of directors member Linda Arnold tells the Journal & Courier that if Congress doesn’t renew a production tax credit that’s set to expire Dec. 31 the wind energy sector will likely take a hit.

Indiana was once one of the fastest growing states for wind energy. The American Wind Energy Association says that in 2009 Indiana added the second highest power capacity for new wind of any state. But then the recession slowed the industry’s growth.

The Indiana Office of Energy Development says there are 799 turbines in the state that produce more than 1,300 megawatts of power.
