Conway, Knable elected coroners

Floyd County incumbent keeps office, Clark County emergency responder replaces Coots

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Clark County voters elected Republican Terry Conway, of Jeffersonville, as the county’s next coroner.

Conway secured the position of Clark County Coroner by receiving 23,947 votes, or 53.99 percent, edging out Democrat John Hall, who received 20,404 votes, or 46.01 percent.

The paramedic-firefighter at New Chapel Fire and New Chapel EMS in New Albany and paramedic at Utica Volunteer Fire Department will take the reigns from Edwin “Huck” Coots, who is not eligible to run for a third-consecutive term.

Conway will be the first person not of the Coots family to hold the office since 1888, excluding two years in the 1920s.

“I am really excited, and a little anxious,” Conway said, shortly after capturing the victory.

He attributed his successful run to the residents of Clark County looking for something new out of the coroner’s office.

“People were ready for a change,” he said. “They have had the same thing, and I think they felt it was time to try something new.”

Conway said his large support team was another crucial component to his winning campaign.

“I am very thankful for all of their hard work,” he said of his supporters. “I did not do this by myself. I had great support from my family. My supporters were behind me 100 percent.”

The emergency responder said he experienced a mix of nervous energies throughout Election Day leading up to the results being released.

“I was optimistic, but I stayed nervous the entire time until it was clear my lead was out of reach,” he said.

Conway said he is ready to turn his focus from the election to the duties that await him.

“I am a little bit anxious, but I am ready to get ready to work,” he said. “I am looking at the steps to move forward and forming my game plan.”

He said building his game plan includes creating a team and getting everyone on track so the Clark County Coroner’s Office under his watch can hit the ground running on Jan. 1.

“I am very happy with the result and happy to serve the people of Clark County,” Conway said. “I will do the best job I can possible do.”

Floyd County Coroner

Democrat Leslie Knable was re-elected Floyd County Coroner after receiving 53 percent of the vote Tuesday night.

Knable, a veterinarian and owner of Blackiston Mill Animal Clinic, earned 18,177 of a total 33,825 votes cast.

She was elected over New Albany medical doctor and Republican Thomas Sonne who received 15,648 votes, or 46 percent of the vote.
