NEW ALBANY —
Between 15 and 20 antique fire trucks are expected to be on display during the New Albany Vintage Fire Museum and Safety Education Center’s inaugural muster Sept. 24.
An old tradition, musters launched as a way for fire departments to congregate and display their equipment. Curt Peters, chairman of the New Albany Fire Museum, said musters often featured contests among the fire departments.
In modern times, musters typically are held to showoff vintage fire equipment.
“Because these musters are pretty popular, and one of our board members has had a lot of experience with musters, we decided we wanted to start this as an annual event in New Albany,” Peters said.
Officials are still hopeful the museum will open this year at 411 E. Spring St. The muster will be held in an adjacent parking lot at 500 E. Spring St., and West Fifth Street between Spring and Elm Streets will be closed for the event.
“One of the nice features is that there are people from the region who have their own fire antique trucks and are going to be bringing them,” Peters said.
Museum board member Jeff Rider hosts a muster at his house each year, and took the lead with organizing the event.
Rider said new fire trucks just don’t have the same aesthetic appeal of their older counterparts.
“They’ll get to see how the fire trucks used to look in the old days — how they had their own character,” Rider said of those who attend the museum’s muster, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “There was more pride in the equipment maybe then than there is now.”
Hot dogs, chili dogs, cole slaw, cookies, soft drinks and coffee will be sold during the event, and a special fire helmet will be raffled. Proceeds will benefit the New Albany Vintage Fire Museum.
There’s no charge for attending the muster, but the museum will be open for paid tours Sept. 24 during the event.
The cost for a tour will be $5 for adults, and $2 for children. Members of Friends of the New Albany Fire Museum will receive free admission.
Members can also park free in the lots in front of and adjacent to the museum along Spring Street during Harvest Homecoming.
Costs for membership are $25 per person, or $40 for a family. For information on becoming a member, contact David Barksdale at 502-751-9686, or by e-mail at dddcbark@aol.com
