Couple’s car strikes Georgetown post office

No one was injured inside the building; driver, passenger taken to hospital

GEORGETOWN — An couple in their 80s was taken to the hospital after driving their vehicle into the side of the Georgetown post office Friday morning.

Mary Hobbs, 81, accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes as she was pulling into a handicapped parking space, and sent the 2011 Honda over a concrete sidewalk and into the one-story brick building, Floyd County Sheriff’s Detective Maj. Jeff Topping said.

Her husband, Floyd Hobbs, 82, was in the passenger seat.

Topping said no one was seriously injured in the incident, but the couple was transported to the Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services for precautionary measures.

Georgetown post office employee Paula Saulman said the only two people in the building at the time of the accident was another employee and herself.

“It sounded like something dropped on the building,” Saulman said of the impact.

She said she first thought the crash had happened inside the building. Saulman said her office was disrupted by the wreck, but she was in another part of the building at the time. She said the impact was severe enough to move her desk about three feet and knock several pictures off the wall.

“I have a big mess to clean up in there,” Saulman said of her office.

The damage to the exterior of the building included several long fractures along the mortar between the brick work near where the vehicle made impact. A metal down spout was left bent and flattened against the building directly in front of a single handicapped parking spot.

Topping said the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office will not be pursuing charges.
