Police say cab driver crossed center line and was struck by oncoming Cadillac

FLOYD COUNTY — The identity of one of the four people killed late Sunday night in a firey two-vehicle collision on Ind. 111 has been released.

Thomas Stinson Jr., 60, of Bardstown Road in Louisville, was pronounced dead at 1:06 a.m. today [Monday] while at University of Louisville Hospital, Jefferson County, Ky., Deputy Coroner Larry Carroll said. Stinson, the single occupant of a Cadillac, had been taken by air ambulance to the hospital. Carroll said an autopsy revealed Stinson succumbed to multiple, blunt-force injuries he received in the collision.

The collision occurred on the state road near the intersection of Seven Mile Lane.

Stinson’s Cadillac collided with a Yello Cab taxi, resulting in the death of all three passengers in the cab. The cab driver, who was taken to U of L Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, was the only person not killed in the wreck. The cab driver was off duty at the time of the collision, Topping said.

Maj. Jeff Topping with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office said the names of those killed in the taxi cab will not be released by his department.

The Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office and Floyd County Sheriff’s Office have scheduled a press conference for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday regarding the fatal collision.

The collision caused the taxi cab to erupt in flames, Topping said, adding that the passengers in the vehicle were burnt beyond recognition. Officials may resort to dental records to identify the passengers of the taxi cab, Topping said.

Topping said early investigation revealed that the taxi cab was traveling north when it left the right side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected and drove the vehicle across the center line, at which time it collided with the Cadillac traveling south. Topping said direct impact was made to the passenger side of the cab.

He said the cab driver was able to exit the vehicle before the cab went up in flames.
