JEFFERSONVILLE —
Tom Lowe, head of the city of Jeffersonville’s legal department, announced Friday he would resign from his position of corporation counsel effective March 29.
Lowe said in a news release from the city that he is “exploring and considering other opportunities in my career and public service that the time commitment of my current position does not permit.”
Lowe has served as corporation counsel since Mayor Mike Moore took office in January 2012. He is a lifelong Clark County resident and previously served as Sellersburg Town Court judge until that bench was abolished.
Moore said in the release that he understands and appreciates Lowe’s reason for departure.
“Tom is a talented attorney and tremendous individual,” Moore said in the release. “He has been a part of my team since day one. I’m disappointed to see him leave. But, I think he has other career aspirations that are bigger than the role he played in my administration. I wish him and his family all the best in those endeavors.”
Moore said he has not decided on a replacement for Lowe and that City Attorney Les Merkley will oversee the city’s legal department in the interim.
Corporation council is the statutory title for the head of the city’s legal department. The deputy department head is the city attorney.
“This is a very important position in my administration and for the citizens of Jeffersonville,” Moore said. “The next two weeks will give us the time to better evaluate our options while ensuring a smooth transition.”
Lowe said he is thankful Moore gave him the chance to serve Jeffersonville.
“I wish everyone in city government the best as Jeffersonville leads Clark County into the future.”
