Northaven looking for donations
Northaven Elementary School is participating in the Blessings in a Backpack program for the 2011-12 school year.
This unique program is designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Meal Program, and have little to no food on the weekends. Northaven is participating in this program by sending home backpacks with students in need. It takes only $80 to feed a child in the program for an entire school year.

Wine, shopping event tickets on sale
Tickets are available for Hops, Shops, & Chardonnay. The event is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 21 on Spring Street in Jeffersonville.
The event, put on by Jeffersonville Main Street Inc. and the downtown merchants, features tasting stations of craft brews and wines located within shops. Also offered will be a wide variety of hors d’oeuvres, five live musical acts and special sales at shops. Several area wineries will also be on hand to offer wine tastings and sell by the bottle. Tickets are $15 in advance and available for sale online at JeffMainStreet.org and at: Choices/CCF, 437 Spring St.; Schimpff’s Confectionery, 347 Spring St.; and The Springs Salon & Spa, 234 Spring St.
Tickets are $20 on the day of the event at the registration tent inside Glossbrenner Garden at Spring and Chestnut streets, starting at 5:45 p.m.
Online ticket-purchasers should present their PayPal receipt along with their ID the evening of the event. Each participant must be at least 21 years of age in order to receive beer or wine samples.
Resident appearing on game show
Jeffersonville resident Megan Liagre will appear as a contestant on “The Price Is Right” at 11 a.m. Oct. 14.
The program airs on WLKY-TV.

Kids’ musicals set at Derby Dinner
Derby Dinner Playhouse announced its 25th children’s musical theatre season. Subscriptions to their Saturday public performances are now available and the season begins this Saturday.
The 2011-12 season offers the following musicals: “Miss Nelson Is Missing,” “A Velveteen Rabbit Christmas,” “How I Became A Pirate,” and “Rapunzel.” Season subscribers receive preferred seating and more than 50 percent off the price of a child’s ticket when a season ticket is ordered for all four shows. The children’s musical theatre series features breakfast and lunch performances on Saturdays. The buffet offers kid-friendly food. Subscribers also will get visits from Bravo the Star, the children’s theatre mascot, at each performance.

Fundraiser to benefit family
Mallory’s Mission Fundraiser for Kids will begin at noon and end at 9 p.m. Saturday at Beechwood Park in Scottsburg. Fun activities for the entire family will be held throughout the day, including a corn hole tournament, talent show and free movie.
Born with a fatal congenial heart defect, Mallory Lainhart lived for nine months. The fundraiser benefits Kosair Children’s Hospital, Hearts and Hands Pallative Care and a scholarship fund for Scottsburg and Austin students. For more information call 812-595-6226.

Rescue League hosting free event
The Floyd County Animal Rescue League will host an event from 1 to 3 p.m., Oct. 15, at the Strassweg Auditorium inside the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, in coordination with National Feral Cat Day.
The event will include information and demonstrations on humane trapping; keeping outdoor cats warm and safe during the winter months; spaying and neutering; how low-income pet owners can obtain financial assistance; how to become a volunteer and/or member of the Floyd County Animal Rescue League; and more. Free desserts and coffee will be provided, and all in attendance will have a chance at winning one of 10 $40 cat-care vouchers that will be given away at the event.

St. Mary’s hosting Rosary rally
The public is invited to join in a Public Square Rosary Rally at noon, Oct. 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Eighth and Spring streets, in New Albany.
The Rosary will be prayed at the Annunciation Grotto entrance along Spring Street. This Public Square Rosary, sponsored by America Needs Fatima, will be one of more than 7,000 rallies that will take place all across the United States on that day.
