Groups hosting event for vets

JEFFERSONVILLE — Clark County’s Chapter of American Red Cross along with the Volunteers of America — Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program, the Veteran’s Affairs Agency, Work On and other government agencies will host a Stand Down event for veterans from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21, at Warder Park, in Jeffersonville.

The event is designed to provide services to unemployed, underemployed, homeless and “at risk” veterans.

Stand Downs are typically events providing services to Veterans such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment, according to a press release. The intent is to find our nation’s veterans and see that they receive the benefits they have earned, continue to lead successful lives or get started on the path to success.

Clark County’s Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Committee will be providing backpacks for the participants, which will include items like regular size bar soap; wash cloths; shampoo; toothbrushes; tooth paste; disposable razors; shaving cream; deodorant; baby wipes; hand sanitizer; hair brushes/combs; toilet paper-individual rolls; facial tissue; insect repellent; and crew socks.

The Red Cross is seeking donations of those items and they can be dropped off at Clark County’s Red Cross Chapter from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1805 E. Eighth St., in Jeffersonville.
