JEFFERSONVILLE —
A former car dealer who lives in New Albany was arrested Wednesday after several people reported not receiving titles months after purchasing vehicles from her company.
Yakera Lawson-Fowler, 33, was charged this week with three counts of class B misdemeanor failure to provide a title to a purchased vehicle following an Indiana State Police investigation that began in January.
According to a probable-cause affidavit, an ISP detective learned in January that a Charlestown man had purchased a 1998 Ford Mustang on Nov. 8 and a Memphis woman had purchased a 1996 Honda Civic in August, but neither had received titles to the vehicles. Both vehicles were sold by the same person in the parking lot at Rob’s Touch of Glass in Jeffersonville.
The man told police he had been selling vehicles for Cars, Inc. According to Secretary of State records, the business was located on McClain Street in Scottsburg and was owned by Lawson-Fowler. According to ISP, Lawson Fowler began selling the vehicles at different locations in Clark County after closing the used car lot in Scottsburg.
A man from Chicago reported on May 9 that he had purchased a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe from the website craigslist.com in January. He picked up the truck from Lawson-Fowler’s husband but never received the title.
The detective spoke to her husband, Arthur Fowler, who said he sold the vehicle and there had been problems obtaining the title for it. He said he would not tell the detective his wife’s location.
Clark County Superior Court No. 3 Judge Joe Weber ordered Lawson-Fowler be released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled for an initial hearing on July 21. There was no telephone number listed for her in the phone book.
A class B misdemeanor carries a possible sentence of up to 180 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.
