BORDEN —
A 21-year-old Borden man killed himself with a handgun Friday afternoon, police say, and the proximity of the shooting to school buildings led to a short lockdown on the campus.
Borden Police Chief Jerry Crotchett said the man was in his bedroom of his Stark Drive home when he committed the act about 1:30 p.m. He said the man’s sister was the only other person in the home at the time of his death.
After police received the call of the self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Borden school complex, which includes both the elementary and junior/senior high school, was temporarily put on lockdown. Crotchett said the school lockdown was a safety measure as the home where the shooting occurred is just a few hundred feet from the school.
Crotchett said the man’s parents said their son had recently showed signs of depression. He said he is working with other agencies to determine who owned the firearm, adding that the man’s parents said they were not aware their son had possession of the handgun.
