NEW ALBANY —
A 58-year-old New Albany man is in jail on felony charges of sexual abuse of a child.
George W. Allen, of 2249 Park Ave., was arrested by Jeffersontown, Ky., police and was being held at Louisville Metro Corrections when he was picked up by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department Monday and brought to the Floyd County Jail.
Allen is believed by the New Albany Police Department to have sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl over the course of 18 months.
Police did not confirm the number of multiple sexual encounters believed to have taken place.
Maj. Keith Whitlow with NAPD said the child and Allen knew each other.
The child reported the abuse, described a fondling, to a school resource officer at a Floyd County middle school Oct. 24, at which time the officer handed the information over to investigators.
Whitlow said the alleged child abuse did not take place on school property.
Investigators filed a probable cause affidavit for Allen’s arrest Nov. 14, and a warrant was issued the following day.
According to court documents, at least one of the crimes was committed as far back as May 2011.
Allen has been charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 3 with child molesting and vicarious sexual gratification, both C felonies.
A class C felony charge of vicarious sexual gratification occurs, according to Indiana state law, when “a person 18 years of age or older who knowingly or intentionally directs, aids, induces, or causes a child under the age of 16 to touch or fondle himself or another child under the age of 16 with intent to arouse or satisfy the sexual desires of a child or the older person.”
Court documents had not been updated as of press time of Allen’s next appearance in the court.
