New Albany man robbed while he was sleeping

Computer,electronic game missing from home

NEW ALBANY — A 50-year-old New Albany man apparently slept while burglars were inside his home stealing a laptop computer and an electronic game just before noon Wednesday, according to New Albany Police Department Capt. Keith Whitlow.

The man, who resides in the 500 block of Hornung Hills Drive, told investigating officers that he was sleeping in his home when he was awoke by the sound of the back door slamming. Upon checking, he discovered that a window was open in another part of the house and found the laptop computer and the electronic game missing.

This comes a day after two men broke into a home in the 1500 block of East Elm Street around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.

The two men pointed automatic weapons at a couple and demanded money. After the man first refused, both he and his wife were “pistol-whipped” by the intruders. He eventually gave them money and they fled the scene. Whitlow said he doesn’t believe the two incidents are related.

“Most burglars will not come into a home if they think someone is home. I don’t think they knew there was someone inside the house,” Whitlow said of the Hornung Hills Drive burglary. “The other incident was a home invasion burglary and an armed robbery. They knew people were home.”

Whitlow said both crimes are still under investigation. However, he said he is confident the two are not related. “These are two different types of scenarios,” he said.

The couple robbed early Wednesday described their attackers as black men in their 20s, wearing black jackets and black toboggans. Both were reported armed with semi-automatic handguns.
