JEFFERSONVILLE —
A 65-year-old Jeffersonville man was charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 2 Thursday after he was made the subject of a controlled drug buy by Jeffersonville police.
William A. Jones, of the 1700 block of Spring Street, told police at the time of his arrest Tuesday, Oct. 9, “he was down on his luck and did not have any other means of income other than selling dope,” according to the incident report.
Jeffersonville police worked undercover to set up the controlled buy, which started with a recorded phone call to Jones on Tuesday.
During the conversation officers set up a time to meet Jones at a laundry mat at Eighth Street and Ewing Lane.
When the undercover officer arrived, Jones came out of the business and got into the officer’s vehicle.
While in the vehicle, according the incident report, documented law enforcement funds were handed over to Jones for payment of the drugs.
The officer noted that after receiving the money, Jones removed a clear, plastic bag containing an off-white, rock-like substance from his mouth to complete the transaction.
The substance was later field tested and identified as crack cocaine, according to the report.
After receiving the drugs from Jones, a remark was made that the amount of drugs appeared to be light.
Jones was given back the plastic bag and traded it out for another plastic bag of crack cocaine in his mouth.
As the undercover officer and Jones traveled on Walnut Street, another officer made a traffic stop on the vehicle.
According to the incident report, police wanted to make the arrest during a traffic stop, “in an attempt to make a low-key arrest.”
As officers took Jones into custody, two additional bags of crack were found in his mouth.
When Jones had previously gotten into the undercover officer’s vehicle, he asked if he could be taken to an address on Walnut Street. As he was being taken into custody, $130 was found in his possession. He told the officers he needed to go to the Walnut Street home to deliver the money to his cocaine supplier who had fronted him the drugs.
Jones was charged with dealing cocaine or narcotic drug within 1,000 feet of a family housing complex, a class A felony.
A class A felony carries a 50-year maximum sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction.
According to court documents, Jones is scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference Nov. 5.
