FLOYDS KNOBS —
In the summer of 1962, the Rev. David Taylor of Floyds Knobs Christian Church and the Rev. Paul Ofer of St. Mary of the Knobs got together to discuss forming a club to “initiate and support projects to promote recreation, community spirit, good fellowship and friendly relationship in the community.”
On Oct. 24, 1962, a board of directors was elected and the dream of a community club soon became a reality.
Fifty years later, the club is stronger than ever and from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, the public is invited to participate in a 50th anniversary party, which will include a chili cook-off, hayride and trunk-or-treat event.
There were 900 families who belonged in that first year, according to David Schindler, a charter member of the club. He said the directors held meetings every two or three months and on May 31, 1963, purchased the ground where the club and six Little Leagues fields are located at 4032 Weber Lane.
“It was just a cow path prior to the community club locating there,” Schindler said.
At first, there was only a shelter constructed at the site, but in 1974, the current building was constructed. The community club income is generated through membership, building rentals and the Floyds Knobs Little League. There are currently 100 families who belong to the club. Yearly membership fees are inexpensive — $25 for family, $10 for a senior couple, $7 for a single senior and $15 for a single membership.
Floyds Knobs Community Club President Bryan Condra said he is pleased with the growth of the Floyds Knobs Little League, which uses the grounds.
“We have a good group of guys there who know what they are doing,” Condra said of the Little League leadership.
The Floyds Knobs Community Club is comprised of residents of the Floyds Knobs community and has no political or religious ties.
