Clarksville contractor gets $90M contract

Gohmann to construct part of I-69

BLOOMINGTON — Clarksville-based Gohmann Asphalt and Construction was awarded a $90 million contract Wednesday to construct part of Interstate 69, which will eventually connect Evansville to Indianapolis.

Gohmann Asphalt received the third contract awarded for I-69 construction in what is known as “section 4” of the project, according to an Indiana Department of Transportation press release. The company is set to build 6 1/2 miles of roadway in Monroe and Greene counties and was one of 10 contractors vying for the project.

The 142-mile I-69 corridor in Indiana was divided into six independent sections and was approved by the Federal Highway Administration in March 2004, with funding dedicated in May 2010 that included an accelerated design and construction schedule, according to the release. Section 4 is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2014, and connects U.S. 231 near the Crane Naval Warfare Center with the existing four-lane Ind. 37 south of Bloomington.

“By the end of this year, we will have completed 67 miles of new interstate highway,” said INDOT Deputy Commissioner of Major Programs Samuel Sarvis in the release. “An additional 27 miles will have begun construction this year.”

According to a Herald-Times report, INDOT spokeswoman Cher Elliott said in the next two to three weeks, INDOT will hold a preconstruction conference with officials from Gohmann, its subcontractors and public utilities to discuss the contract, expectations and standards and to address any questions regarding the project.

At the meeting, a rough work schedule will be developed, and work will start with locating or relocating utilities, she said.
