NEW ALBANY —
New owners have opened Spring Valley Funeral & Cremation Service in a familiar location.
Andy and Brandy Rumph have taken over the former Pyke-Calloway Funeral Home, at 1217 E. Spring St., which had been closed for nearly five months. The two Jackson County natives are excited about the opportunity to own their own funeral home. They have already had one funeral at the facility.
“We have been doing a lot of work, and we still have a lot of work to do,” Andy Rumph said. “This opportunity became available and we really like the area.”
While the Rumphs are making some physical changes to the building, which has been a funeral home for decades under the Mullineaux family and most recently Pyke-Calloway, they also want residents to know the only similarity between them and the former owners is the building.
Rick Pyke, owner of Pyke-Calloway, is facing numerous felony theft charges for allegedly cashing life insurance policies for people who are still alive and for selling preneed funeral services, but not putting the money into escrow or trust accounts as required by law.
“Hopefully by changing the name people will know there are new owners,” Andy Rumph said. “We want people to know they can trust us with their families and we are here to serve them.”
Rumph said during the past two months, the funeral home has been undergoing many repairs and updates to better serve the community. A new family lounge and handicapped accessible bathroom have been added, as well as a preparation room so that all work is done on site.
Andy Rumph was first licensed as a funeral director in 1987 and served as Jackson County coroner for two terms and has served 13 years in the office altogether. Brandy Rumph is a licensed respiratory therapist currently working at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. Both said they are anxious to become part of Floyd County.
Spring Valley Funeral and Cremation Service will offer services ranging from direct cremations to traditional burials. Andy Rumph said Spring Valley prices will be lower than most due to fewer overhead costs.
The funeral home received its license May 1.
