Excessive heat warning issued for the next few days

The heat index is expected to be about 105 degrees during the afternoon and evening hours

LOUISVILLE — The National Service in Louisville has issued an excessive heat warning in effect from noon Wednesday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

The heat index is predicted to be about 105 degrees during afternoon and evening hours Wednesday through Saturday. Illnesses such as heat-related exhaustion or heat stroke are a threat and dehydration can occur quickly, according to a news release from the weather service. Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe.

People are advised to do outside work or activities in the morning hours or late evening, to wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing and to drink plenty of water.

Those outside should take frequent breaks in shaded areas or indoors with air conditioning.

Temperatures are forecasted at 99 or 100 today through Saturday, with a cool-down — of sorts — to 96 on Sunday. There is a 20 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms today, but no other chances of precipitation listed until Sunday, which brings a 30-percent chance.

“A combination of high temperatures and high humidity can create a dangerous situation for you and your family” said Andrew Velasquez III, FEMA Region V administrator, in a news release. “Know the steps you can take to stay safe in excessive heat and remember to check in on family, friends and neighbors especially those who are elderly, disabled or have functional needs.”
