Horseshoe Foundation awards $520,000 in scholarships

NEW ALBANY — Graduates from New Albany, Floyd Central, Community Montessori and Providence high schools have received scholarships from the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County. Fifty-two new scholarship recipients joined nearly 150 others recently already receiving the scholarships of $10,000 over four years.

“Our scholarship program is one of the most rewarding initiatives we have,” said Mark Seabrook, a board member and president of the Horseshoe Foundation. “The feedback we get from students and families is full of gratitude for this help. For many students college would not be possible without this help.”

Holly Roth, a New Albany graduate, said the award will relieve some of the financial burdens that come with going away to college.

Other recipients agreed.

“With your help I am sure to succeed and eventually become a contributing member of the community. Your foundation is so generous in giving so much,” said Michael Deerr, a Floyd Central graduate.

Horseshoe Foundation scholarship recipients can attend any accredited college or trade school in the country, but many stay close to home. This year, Indiana University Southeast received scholarship funds for 40 students; IU Bloomington has 23 scholarships; Ivy Tech Community College has 20 scholarships; Purdue University has 18 scholarships; and the University of Louisville has 16 scholarships. Scholarship checks to 27 different colleges have been sent on behalf of the students this week.

The foundation’s scholarship program was established in 2002 to benefit students of Floyd County and $3.95 million has been awarded to date. The intent of the foundation scholarship program is to encourage high school graduates in Floyd County who have worked hard as high school students to continue post-secondary education who otherwise might not do so.

The Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County provides funds to benefit the Floyd County community and to date has contributed $27.2 million. Horseshoe Southern Indiana has contributed $43.5 million to the Foundation.
