CLARK COUNTY —
Indiana State Police seized more than $50,000 worth of marijuana during a traffic stop Wednesday in Clark County, according to an ISP press release.
At 4:47 p.m., Trooper Nate Abbott observed a gray 2005 Ford Taurus following a semi truck too closely in the slow lane of Interstate 65 southbound near mile marker 16 at Memphis. The vehicle was stopped, and the trooper smelled what was described as an “overwhelming odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle.”
Police searched the trunk and found 50 one-gallon plastic bags inside two suitcases and a plastic tote. The bags were filled with marijuana, and each weighed about 1 pound.
Corey L. Beckwith, 30, and Michael C. Stokes, 22, both from Indianapolis, were preliminarily charged with class C felony dealing marijuana, class D felony possession of marijuana, class D felony possession of marijuana with a prior conviction and class D felony maintaining a common nuisance. Police also seized $2,185 from Beckwith, the driver of the vehicle.
