FLOYD COUNTY —
The tree has already been placed at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, and now it’s in need of decorations to honor military veterans and active service men and women.
For the second year, the library is taking part in the Purdue Military Family Research Institute’s Our Heroes tree program. It’s in conjunction with the upcoming holiday season, and provides families and friends of veterans the chance to celebrate the lives and sacrifices of their loved ones.
“People just love having pictures of their relatives or friends up there and honoring them,” said Betty Menges, director of the NAFC Library’s Stuart B. Wrege Indiana History Room where the tree is displayed.
Participants can bring-in an ornament they made at home, or they can make one in the Indiana History Room. Once submitted, the decorations are also displayed online on the Purdue website.
“The internet virtual tree does have the ornaments that were put up last year. As we receive new ones they will be added to that,” Menges said.
In conjunction with the Our Heroes tree, the library is collecting items to donate to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville.
Paperback books in good condition are being accepted, as are recent magazines not older than three months. The library will not accept hardback books.
The library is asking people donate the following hygiene items for the hospital: Soft toothbrushes, denture cleaner, dental floss, shampoo, powder, hand lotion, hair picks, disposable razors, white socks, nail clippers, freestanding shaving mirrors, toothpaste, denture adhesive, deodorant, no-rinse shampoo, foot powder, combs, brushes, shaving cream, non-skid slipper socks and chap stick.
For more information, call the library’s Indiana History Room at 812-949-3527.
