JEFFERSONVILLE —
A man arrested Dec. 22 for keeping a woman in his home against her will and other preliminary charges appeared in a Clark County court Thursday.
Michael Ellery, 50, who resides in Claysburg II Towers in Jeffersonville, was charged with criminal confinement and possession of a narcotic drug, both class B felonies, and intimidation and battery with a deadly weapon, both class C felonies, in Clark County Circuit Court No. 2.
Ellery was booked into the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional complex Dec. 22, after police found probable cause that he did not allow a woman to leave his apartment for more than four hours after she refused to smoke crack cocaine with him. While the woman was being held in Ellery’s apartment, he struck her with his hand and with a hatchet, leaving a deep bruise on her arm, police reported.
After the woman spoke with police, officers went to Ellery’s home and found cocaine in his possession, according to police records.
Ellery was previously arraigned Wednesday in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1, where Judge Daniel Moore set his bond at $25,000 court cash.
The case was later transferred to Circuit Court No. 2, where the bond was dismissed and Ellery was released, three days after his arrest, because he suffers from medical conditions, according to court officials.
If found guilty of the four felony charges, Ellery could be placed in the Indiana Department of Correction for a maximum of 56 years.
A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Jan. 28.
