SELLERSBURG — Indiana State Police is urging motorists to make simple, and life-saving choices while traveling state roadways.
ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin said too often motorists choose to not buckle up, and motorcyclists decide to leave their helmets at home.
ISP said these decisions are consistently linked to traffic accidents turning into unnecessary fatalities.
Already this year, according to a news release from ISP, there have been 513 people killed in traffic crashes on Indiana’s roads.
Of those 513 fatalities, 211 — or 41 percent — were not wearing a seat belt.
From this same 513 traffic deaths, 109 were the result of motorcycle crashes where 89, or 81 percent, of the motorcyclists killed were not wearing a helmet.
“While it will never be known how many of the deceased may have survived if they had been buckled up in their cars or were wearing a helmet while operating or being a passenger on a motorcycle, common sense says a number of these people would have survived,” the ISP reported in a recent statement.
“Year after year, traffic fatality statistics reveal whether in a traditional motor vehicle, or on a motorcycle, those that wear seat belts and helmets greatly improve their chance of surviving the crash.”
ISP hopes the most recent statistics will result in more people taking basic safety precautions.
“If you do not want to use common sense, then please believe the statistics. Buckle up in cars and wear helmets on motorcycles,” ISP reported. “It really is just that simple.”
