> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
It’ll be Democrat Sharon Grabowski taking on Republican Ed Clere for Indiana State Representative District 72 in November.
Grabowski, a retired teacher from New Albany, bested Tom Lenfert during Tuesday’s Democratic primary. She received 1,722 votes, or 58.1 percent, while Lenfert received 1,240 votes, or 41.8 percent.
Attempts to reach Grabowski and Lenfert after the election results came in were unsuccessful.
Grabowski has been campaigning on issues such as funding for schools, job creation and Medicare funding. Clere, a New Albany Realtor, is in his second consecutive term in Indianapolis.
District 72 is entirely contained in Floyd County and includes the city of New Albany.
DISTRICT 70
In the area’s other contested statehouse primary, longtime Harrison County Commissioner Terry Miller defeated political newcomer Alva J. “Jim” Kincaid. Miller received 2,509 votes, or 63.6 percent in Harrison, Floyd and Clark counties while Kincaid received 1,438, or 36.4 percent.
“I just really do appreciate all the support,” said Miller. “I’ll do my best not to let them down.”
He said he plans to run a grassroots campaign heading into November, saying he won’t receive the same level of funding as his opponent.
Key issues during the race will be education and what he calls attacks on workers rights.
“Terry was a well-known name,” said Kincaid.
He said he harbored no ill feelings toward him, but only had a few differences of opinions here and there. He asked his supporters to get behind Miller during the November general election.
Miller will be taking on incumbent Republican Rhonda J. Rhoads, who was unopposed in the primary. Voters in the northern portion Clarksville, Sellersburg, Galena, Georgetown and Greenville will see the race on their ballots.
Miller is from Elizabeth and served as a member of the Harrison County Commissioners for more than 17 years. He also served as a county Democratic Party chairman and superintendent of the Elizabeth Water Co.
Rhoads, 61 and a retired teacher, unseated 32-year incumbent Paul Robertson for the Statehouse seat two years ago.
In Southern Indiana, Democrat Steve Stemler is unopposed in District 71; Terry Goodin, D, ran unopposed in District 66; and in District 73, incumbent Republican Steve Davisson will face off against Democrat Sandra Blanton in November.
General election day is Nov. 6.
