NEW ALBANY —
A Louisville man pleaded guilty Thursday to three robberies at The Drug Store in Edwardsville.
Gary Gallenstein, 38, went to the store — located at 1044 N. Luther Road — on Sept. 27, Oct. 13 and Oct. 19. According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, he displayed a weapon and demanded OxyContin each time. He stole a total of 208 OxyContin tablets before he was caught after a short police pursuit and standoff.
Gallenstein pleaded guilty in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 to three counts of class B felony armed robbery. He will be sentenced to seven years and 180 days at the Indiana Department of Correction and then be on probation for two years and 185 days if Judge Susan Orth accepts the agreement at a hearing March 1.
Police had received limited information after the first two robberies. During the third robbery, truckers who had stopped nearby provided police with a description of a late 1990s model Toyota Corolla. An officer spotted a vehicle matching that description on North Luther Road past Duffy Road.
After a short chase, Gallenstein pulled into an open garage in the 2100 block of North Luther Road. The SWAT team was called to the scene, and a standoff lasted for about 40 minutes.
According to police, Gallenstein drove toward the officers and they fired seven to nine shots at the vehicle. The front driver’s side tire was struck, and Gallenstein became stuck in a muddy drainage ditch. He surrendered following brief negotiations.
Kim Kraimer, Gallenstein’s public defender, declined to comment.
