CASI names Men of Distinction
The Community Action of Southern Indiana annual signature event — “Men of Distinction” — will be held Sept. 11 at The Grand, 138 E. Market St., New Albany.
The event honors and recognizes men that are engaged in outstanding, numerous community and civic programs, services and initiatives. CASI serves families and individuals within poverty guidelines of Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties. The 22 honorees are listed below by their respective counties:
• Clark County: Jeffrey Caldwell, Rich Carter, Edward Culpepper Cooper, Ron Fields, Mark Lovan and Juan Morales.
• Floyd County: Terrance “Terry” Becker, Judge Terrence “Terry” Cody, James Aebersold, Shane Gibson, Maury Goldberg, James Hickerson, Carl Malysz, Norman “Norm” Melheiser, Darrell Mills, Rupert Strawbridge, Derrick Booker, Mark Henderson, Jesse Floyd and Rev. O. Lacy Evans.
• Harrison County: Rand Heazlitt and Dan Walsh.

Youth Count meeting upcoming
Individuals interested in and concerned about the well-being and of our children and young people are encouraged to attend the upcoming Youth Count meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. July 13 in the lower level conference room at the Cancer Care Center, 2210 Green Valley Road, New Albany.
The meeting will provide opportunities to learn how individuals of different backgrounds promote youth development building the 40 Developmental Assets for and with youth. The 40 Assets are the experiences, behaviors and attitudes that help young people succeed in life.
Speakers will be Vicki Williamson, who will share about her Encouragement Buddy program, used with local girls’ softball teams. A local pastor will share how asset building has become a focus at his church, and others will share some of their simple means of encouraging asset building in others.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share about new asset building actions undertaken by them or their organization. Even if you just want to come to listen, you will find it is motivating and energizing to hear the steps others take to help ensure success for our young people.

Woman philanthropist nominees sought
The public is invited to nominate outstanding Indiana women for the distinction of the 2010 Woman Philanthropist and the 2010 Emerging Woman Philanthropist to be honored at the sixth-annual Southern Indiana Woman in Philanthropy Regional Celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Showroom at Horseshoe Southern Indiana, Elizabeth.
Community foundations in Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Orange and Washington counties will sponsor the event. The selection of each county’s 2010 Woman Philanthropist of the Year and the 2010 Emerging Woman Philanthropist of the Year will focus on those women who have a history of volunteerism with a significant and positive impact on people, organizations and the community; have inspired others by their leadership; have supported the efforts of individuals by sharing time, skills and experience; and also have financially supported charitable entities in the community and elsewhere.
The Emerging Woman Philanthropist is targeted specifically for women less than 40 years of age. Over the past five years, 44 southern Indiana women have been honored. Each Community Foundation will supply its own nomination forms. Completed forms are due to the Community Foundations by July 14.
Tickets for the Oct. 2 brunch and program will be available in August for $30 per person and $375 for reserved tables of 10.

Parks hosts Off the Road Race
Clarksville Parks and Recreation and Pacers and Racers will sponsor the Off the Road Race, part of the Triple Crown of Turf, for all ages, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday in Lapping Park at the Clarksville Softball Complex, Clarksville.
The 5k Run/Walk will go through Lapping Park. Participants receive a gift and are eligible for door prizes. Awards given to the overall male and female runner and male and female walker. Cost is $10; and $15 on race day.

Greenville town manager hired, incensing silenced crowd

“I understand that manganese is a secondary contaminant and it’s not something that’s necessarily harmful to health,” Burchett said. “I would much prefer that the water that comes into my home have as little manganese in it as possible, as well as anything else. I just want water.”

New Albany council opposes two low-income developments
Councilman Greg Phipps said the measure was changed because there could be “some legal issues” with the way it was originally written. He said regardless, such a resolution that targets low-income developments intimates underlying stereotypes to the community even if it’s not the intention of those who supported the measure.

A fair fee? Indiana imposing fees for 4-H participants for the first time
Allen said his hope is the fee being charged by the state and the county will be enough to cover costs and that 4-H members will not be asked to cover any more expenses.

Council considers opposing low-income developments
Councilman John Gonder said he supports a system that would allow the city to cap sewer credits for low-income housing and give preference to the New Albany Housing Authority.
