Galligan to clean New Albany streets
On Tuesday, the city of New Albany will be getting a clean “sweep” by Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan.
Mayor Doug England and the city of New Albany employees have won the Metro United Way Mayor’s Challenge, and will have the opportunity to watch Galligan beautify the City-County Building by driving a street sweeper around the building.
The two mayors challenged their respective cities to raise money for the Metro United Way 2009 campaign. According to this challenge, the city with the highest percent participation would win the contest and get to watch the losing mayor clean the streets of the winning city.
The Mayor’s Challenge finale will take place at 10:30 at 311 Hauss Square-City County Building, New Albany. The public is invited to attend.

Program offered for abused children
A new program of Regional Youth Services — the accredited foster placement and support services agency at 224 E. Court Ave. in Jeffersonville — now provides the SAFE (Surviving Abuse For Everyone) program, for youth ages 6 to 18, who are referred to RYS by the Indiana Department of Child Services and probation departments in Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott, and Washington counties.
Rachel Turk, manager of SAFE, and licensed therapists are committed to providing young people with resources they need to confront the issues and surmount the barriers that may arise from a sexual abuse experience.
Individuals and groups will meet weekly in the short-term program of six to nine months. When applicable, families will meet monthly, hoping to break the abuse cycle that may have gone unchecked in the past.
To report a suspected or confirmed case of sexual abuse, call the Indiana Department of Child Services toll-free at 800-800-5556. The IDCS will then make the referral to RYS.
Contact Turk at 812-282-8479 ext. 106 or toll-free at 800-838-3008 for more information.
